Gibb upgrades Mkuze water treatment facility

The northern KwaZulu-Natal town of Mkuze’s water treatment facility will be upgraded by engineering firm Gibb, resulting in a larger output of clean water and improved water quality.
Gibb announced on Thursday that the upgrading of the plant was earmarked to unlock growth and development within Mkuze and to pave the way for further economic and social development activity.
“This project is considered to be a flagship project in the area and we believe it will usher the expansion of indispensable housing,” said Gibb technical executive Nokuphumula Mkhwanazi.
The Mkuze water treatment works facility sourced its water from the Pongola dam, which was pumped into the Charl Senegal dam. The water was then pumped through a 160 mm pipe to the plant where it was treated to become potable water.
“At present, the plant’s filters are nonoperational, which means it is not compliant with the Blue Drop certification. It also does not meet the SANS 241 standards, as published in 2015,” noted Gibb project manager Selby Mkhize.
In its current state, the water treatment works plant had the capacity to supply water to an average of 974 households. However, owing to a growing municipality, an estimated 2 800 households would need water in the next ten years.
Gibb had engaged with local contractors to complete sections of construction work on the upgrade project under the main contractor, SBT Civils, subsequently empowering local community members.
Local labourers had been employed by the contractor and trained in various specialised practices.
Construction work for the upgrade project was expected to be completed by December.
